In-depth: Wolves beat Turkeys in seventh round shootout

Round seven of the 2023/24 Basketball Season saw plenty of action last Thursday night at the NSC.  

First game of the evening saw league champion’s Wolves take on Turkeys in what was expected to be a close match. The game started with Wolves taking an early lead with the help of two big  ‘3-pointers’ from outside the arc by Ross Wilson, An under strength Turkeys responded with Chris Wolfendale hitting eight points to keep Turkeys in touch. Victor Capkanovski then took over the ‘3-point’ shooting mantle for Wolves hitting four ‘3-pointer’s’ before the end of the quarter to leave the score 30 – 18 in Wolves favour entering the second quarter 

The second quarter saw Wolves continue to dominate the game with Turkeys struggling to cope with the fast breaks and outside shooting of the Wolves team but helped with a fourteen-point haul in the quarter from Wolfendale the Turkeys team managed to stay in contention trailing 36 – 52 at the half time break 

The third quarter was a close affair with both teams matching each other basket for basket which allowed the Wolves team to maintain their advantage entering the final quarter. The fourth and final quarter saw the Wolves team out run the tiring Turkeys team and they stretched out there lead to eventually take the game 94 – 65 

Man of the match was Victor Capkanovski from Wolves who hit a season high 37 points which included nine ‘3-pointer’s Leading the scoring for the Turkeys team was Chris Wolfendale with 41 points also a season high and which included ten ‘3-pointers’ from outside the arc 

Highlight of the Wolves Turkeys game was the outstanding ‘3-point’ shooting of both teams with a combined total of 24 hit by the teams, fourteen by Wolves and eleven by Turkeys 

The second game of the evening saw Cavaliers take on the young Ravens team who were missing a couple of the regular starters. A blistering start by the Cavs team saw them score 14 unanswered points in the first four minutes of the first quarter. Despite a fight back from the Ravens team they trailed 17 – 9 going into the second quarter. The start of the second quarter saw Dave Minay of Cavs hit ten points with the Ravens team unable to contain his inside moves to the basket, Cavs continued to dominate, and they led 34 – 14 at the half time interval. The third and fourth quarters saw Cavs control the game and they ran out comfortable winners 64 – 29  

Leading the scoring for Cavs was Dave Minay with nineteen points while man of the match Martin French contributed 13 points to the Cavs while Matthew Jones and Seb Smith led the scoring for the Ravens with 8 points a piece 

The final game of the evening saw unbeaten league leaders Jets record a comprehensible victory  

113 – 32 against PWC Hoops, Peter Boussougou of Jets was named man of the match and contributed, and he also led the scoring with 34 points. Danielle Murphy led the Hoops scoring with 16 points
